Two Christchurch mosques attacked in New Zealand left more than 40 dead on Friday.
Livestreaming the entire assault, the gunman has been identified as an Australian extremist, which led to a lockdown in the New Zealand city.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the gunman at one mosque was an Australian-born citizen, describing him as “an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist”.
Marking it as “one of New Zealand’s darkest days”, New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern said, “It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack.”
The Prime Minister Ardern added, “From what we know, it does appear to have been well planned.”
An extremely graphic footage of the shooting is also doing the rounds on social media and the New Zealand police have asked users not to circulate the video.
The New Zealand police confirmed the incident at the mosque in Christchurch and said that a “serious and evolving situation” was occurring and that the shooter was still active.”
While three suspects have been detained, the police believe that there could be more offenders.
Women and children are believed to be among those killed, said witnesses, adding that victims were being shot at a close range.
