The government has cancelled the passports of defaulter 45 Non- residential Indian (NRI) husbands, who absconded their wives after getting married.

Maneka Gandhi Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development said that, the integrated Nodal Agency made to look into the matter has been issuing look- out circulars to absconding husbands in case of marriage and 45 passports have been impounded by the external affair ministry, till now.

Gandhi further said that the government has also introduced a bill in Rajya Sabha to give justice to the women who have been abandoned by their NRI husband but expressed dismay that the bill has got slowed down in upper house.

The bill envisages registration of marriages by non-resident Indian, amendment of Passport Act 1967, and amendment of code of criminal producer 1973.
