Chandigarh: Punjab government has decided to reduce the liquor quota by 32 percent. Moreover, there is reduction in the liquor prices by 18 to 20 percent in the state. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Council of Ministers held in the Punjab Civil Secretariat, where they also approved the liquor policy for the next fiscal year. The government has banned new contracts for opening liquor shops.
Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, while interacting with the media, said that the new liquor policy will increase the number of contract workers from 84 to 700 next year. The leases will be allotted through lottery system where a person will not be able to lease more than 2 contracts. He claimed that Captain’s government is serious about reducing the consumption of alcohol. The target of 5% reduction in the liquor consumption was determined but dropped to 15. During the two-year reign of the Captain government, the consumption will reduce by 47. Due to the reduction in liquor prices in Punjab, the prohibition of liquor smuggling from other states will be stopped. This can also increase the income from liquor by 800 Crore approximately.
