Veteran actor and playwright Girish Karnad passed away at the age of 81 in Bengaluru on Monday.
The actor, who acted in several plays and movies, died on Monday after a prolonged illness.
A multifaceted personality, Karnad was a winner of Jnanpith Award, also conferred the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Padma Shri in 1974.
His plays have been translated in English and other several Indian languages, which were written in Kannada.
Although Karnad started his career as an actor, he is also known as a thinker and writer.
Some his eminent playwright works are ‘Nagmandala’, ‘Tughlaq’ and ‘Yayati’.
In last few years, Karnad was seen in movies such as Ajay Devgn-starrer “Shivaay” and Salman Khan-starrer “Tiger Zinda Hai”.
His Hindi movies include Nishaant, Swami, Pukar, Manthan, Iqbal, Dor, Aashayein and 8 x 10 Tasveer .
Girish Karnad is survived by his wife Saraswathi and son, Raghu Karnad.
The cremation is scheduled to be held at Kalpalli crematorium later in the day.
