Six-time boxing world champion Mary Kom was among ten boxers who were brought into the TOPS scheme for the 2020 Olympics.
The celebrated M C Mary Kom, young shooter Yashaswini Singh Deswal and shuttler Sai Praneeth were among 12 top sportspersons who were included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) by the SAI’s Mission Olympic Cell.
At a meeting chaired by SAI DG Sandip Pradhan, the committee also included 22-year-old Deswal in the TOPS scheme.
Deswal won a gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event in the ISSF World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
Besides the selection of athletes, financial proposals worth Rs 1.4 crore were cleared in 11 sporting disciplines.
A release from the SAI said ₹1.4 crore were cleared for the following:
Wrestling, athletics, archery, table tennis, weightlifting, badminton, tennis, para-badminton, shooting para-archery and para-shooting.
“Scientific testing for 21 athletes chosen under the developmental group is going to take place in two batches on 15th Sept and 30th Sept.”
“Deliberations were held about the high-level committee for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 that is already in place and is headed by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju”, the Sports Authority of India release said.
So far, India has won two Olympic medals in boxing.
In 2008 Beijing Games, Vijender Singh won the bronze, whereas Mary Kom won the bronze in the 2012 London Games.
