Angry farmers attacked a city hall in southern Mexico, tied the mayor to a truck. Not just that, the protesters dragged mayor through the streets for not fulfilling campaign promises.

Police intervened to free Mayor Jorge Luis Escandón Hernández and arrested at least 11 men.

In CCTV footage viral online, Las Margaritas Mayor Jorge Luis Escandon Hernandez can be seen apparently being pulled through Santa Rita after he was abducted from his office.

City employees and other officials attempted to stop the farmers, some of whom were armed with rocks and club, but it was too late.

Another video taken by bystanders outside the mayor’s office features a group of men pulling him out of the building and forcing him onto the back of the vehicle.

Members of the Tojolabal indigenous community armed with clubs broke into the mayor’s office demanding money for municipal projects.

As per reports, this happened for the second time farmers staged a violent protest demanding that the mayor fulfil his campaign promises.

Mayor Escandón said that he would press charges for attempted murder and abduction.

State Attorney General Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca said in a statement that the mayor was recovered safely and not poorly hurt in the assault.

It took dozens of municipal police officials to stop the vehicle and rescue the mayor.

“The attackers were demanding more public resources, including direct cash transfers, for their rural community”, said Luis Llaven.
