At least 45 people have been reported died and more than 100 injured after a petrol tanker fell and exploded in central Nigeria, said the emergency services.
Reportedly, while dodging a pothole, the driver of the fuel-laden vehicle lost his control travelling through the village of Ahumbe in Benue state.
After the crash, local residents gathered around the crashed tanker to collect the leaking gasoline.
Some people went too busy attempting to salvage fuel; they did not realize when the truck caught fire and caused a blast.
The federal road safety commission sector commander for Benue state, Aliyu Baba, “We have recovered 45 corpses of the dead while 101 others sustained serious burns.”
Baba said at least two children and a pregnant woman were amid those who had died.
Terver Akase, the spokesperson for the Benue State government, stated that the death toll could increase.
