Punjab Sports University, launched by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh at Patiala, will not just study traditional games of Punjab or India but Ramdev’s “Yoga” too.
As stated by an advertisement notice issued by the Punjab Sports University Patiala’s inaugural course session 2019-20, the Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga will be 1 year and the yoga courses will help youth with self-employment in schools/colleges.
Where on one hand, writer Jagroop Singh Jarkhar and Darshan Singh Hansar, President of the Kalgidhar Sports Club Kapurthala, favoured the move of the Government Sports University.
However, they said that instead of Punjab’s traditional sports or Olympic Games, why is the university preparing teachers for ‘Yoga’, which is neither sport nor does have any recognition.
They added that: “Why not prepare a teacher to further prepare the players for Punjab’s traditional sports such as Athletics, Horseback Riding, Swordsmanship, Archery, Wrestling, Shooting and Kabaddi, which win medals around the globe.
Jagroop Singh Jarkhar and Darshan Singh Hansar said that for players there’s no better ‘yoga’ than warm up.
It is pertinent to mention that the Bharatiya Janata Party had not just titled Ramdev as ‘Yog Guru’ but also started national Yoga Day’ every year.
Some Sikh organizations oppose Yoga Day as it is celebrated on the same day as Gatka Day.
