Calgary’s Jatinder Tatla has been honoured with the best cab driver of the year award by the International Association of Transportation Regulators (IATR).
Tatla was named ‘International Driver of the Year’ in Calgary last week during an annual White Hat awards ceremony.
Jatinder Tatla is best known from his name ‘Jass’, given by his customers.
The 41-year-old emigrated from India to Canada in 2006. Tatla has been a taxi driver for the past 10 years in Calgary.
Jass Tatla has been working in a checker cab, a taxi company in Calgary, for the last three years.
“My daughter had tears in her eyes when they announced my name,” said Tatla.
“I asked, ‘Why are you crying?’ and she said, ‘I’m not crying — I’m so happy I can’t control myself.'”
Jass adds, “I always learn something from all the different clients. They have their own experience from their age (and) their different jobs.”
Jatinder Tatla believes that every customer deserves to leave with a smile.
Proud to have ‘Jatinder Tatla’ a part of the company
Kurt Enders, the president of Checker Transportation, is proud to have Jatinder Tatla, a part of the company.
“Jass doesn’t care who you are or how far your trip is. He always makes you feel welcome in his cab,” said Kurt Enders.
“He makes sure that however you left if you’re having a good day or bad day, you always leave his car with a smile on your face,” adds Enders.
‘Most Exceptional Customer Service’
However, this is not the first time Tatla is winning an award.
Tourism Calgary presented a white hat to Jass Tatla for ‘most exceptional customer service for a driver’ in May.
“My customers, they carry me,” says Tatla, crediting a loyal customer base for still being in service.
Tatla says he is most busy on Mondays and Thursdays, where he meets up to 30 clients a day. He adds that he has about 1,300 customers.
