Moon in River? Giant Ice Disc Enthralls in Maine

A giant, spinning ice disc has formed in the US city of Westbrook in Maine.

It is almost 100 metres wide and moves in a counter-clockwise direction.

The structure is formed in the Presumpscot River, Cumberland County in Maine.

Its moon-like appearance has led to speculation aliens were involved.

Ice discs are uncommon but form naturally, caused by changing water temperatures, creating a vortex underneath.

A Westbrook city official said that the ice disk is about 300 ft wide and was formed from the swirling current in that section in the river.

As an opportunity to promote the city just outside of Portland, the City of Westbrook wrote on Facebook page, “The mysterious Ice Disk is still spinning today in Westbrook. Come down to the River Walk, take a selfie, and grab some lunch at one of our awesome nearby restaurants!”
