Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday condemned Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal for “rubbing salt on the wounds of the farmers” with his big ask to twofold the “absurd relief” given to them by the Centre.
Flaying out at the ex-deputy chief minister, Amarinder asked Sukhbir as to why he had not spoken up for the farmers all these years, regardless of his SAD being a part of the ruling alliance party at the Centre.
By announcing an insufficient Rs 6,000 per year, which amounts to be Rs 17 a day, the centre had already made a mockery of the farmers to support them in their distress.
“SAD chief had added insult to the injury with his shameless demand,” added the Punjab CM.
The Punjab CM Amarinder questioned, “Did he really believe a thousand rupees a month would help the beleaguered farmers, many of whom were being driven to suicide as a result of their massive debts?”
If the Centre was so concerned in helping the farmers, then it should announce a single loan waiver and to ensure remunerative cost for their produce by implementing the Swaminanthan Committee report, added Capt Amarinder Singh.
