Punjab man was stabbed to death by his friend in Melbourne, Australia, following an altercation between the two.
The victim identified as 26-year-old Paramjit Singh hailed from Dhunda village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab, India.
Paramjit’s father, Harjinder Singh said that his son’s death has “shattered” the family.
The 26-year-old had been studying on a student visa in Australia for nearly 5.5 years and was living in Footscray.
According to police, the incident took place on Friday night when another Punjabi student Sandeep Singh Walia (26), a housemate of M Paramjit, the latter stabbed him to death.after an altercation.
After committing the crime Sandeep Singh fled the spot.
Victoria Police arrested Sandeep Singh and produced him at Melbourne Magistrates Court where he did not apply for bail.
Paramjit’s mother Balwinder Kaur said, “My son was expected to return home after 6 months and now he will never return.”
The Consulate General of India in Melbourne contacted Paramjit’s family over the phone.
A functionary said the Consulate General of India can help in cases where there’s evidence that the family can’t bear the expenses of repatriation of the mortal remains.
However, Paramjit Singh’s friends in Melbourne are raising money to send the body to India.
According to decease’s friends, Paramjit Singh’s parents took a financial loan to send their son to Melbourne, which is yet to be paid.
The CGI Melbourne has also requested Victoria police for a report on the incident.
