‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Producer Riza Aziz Arrested in Malaysia Over 1MDB Scandal
Former Malaysian PM Najib Razak’s stepson and producer of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, Riza Aziz was arrested in Malaysia on Thursday. Anti-corruption chief Latheefa Koya was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter saying, “He has to appear before the court tomorrow to face charges under AMLA (Anti-Money Laundering Act).” Riza’s company, Red Granite Pictures Inc, had used money stolen from 1MDB to fund Hollywood films including the 2013 hit film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ directed by Martin Scorsese, claimed US investigators. 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) is an ongoing political scandal in Malaysia, in which the former Prime Minister of Malaysia and his son was accused of transferring more than USD 700 million from 1MDB, government-run strategic development company into his personal bank account. In July last year, Aziz was questioned over the alleged money laundering and theft at the 1MDB state investment fund. In 2018, $60 million were paid by Riza’s company to settle an assets seizure court case filed by the Justice Department.
