U.K. to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary with Commemorative Coin

Government of the UK has decided to issue a commemorative coin in honour of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

Sajid Javid, Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer had asked the UK’s Royal Mint to work on the commemorative coin.

The Pakistani-origin British finance minister announced this at the annual GG2 ceremony in London on Thursday.

“Tonight’s awards celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary- a fitting time to announce that I’ve asked the Royal Mint of the UK to propose a new commemorative coin in his honour. We should never forget what Gandhi taught the world,” said Sajid Javid.

A British Pakistani bus driver’ son, Javid added Gandhi taught that power doesn’t just come from wealth or high office.

“We must always remember the values he lived his life by and that our parents brought with them when they arrived here all those years ago,” said Javid.

Meanwhile, Sajid Javid topped the power list released yearly by Asian Media Group (AMG), UK-based publishers behind the GG2.

The second most influential person on the GG2 power list 2019 is Priti Patel, the Indian-origin home secretary in the Boris Johnson-led government. Making to top 10 at number 7 was Rishi Sunak, Chief Secretary to the UK Treasury and son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. The third spot went to anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller, born Gina Nadira Singh to Doodnauth Singh, British Guyana’s former Attorney-General. Following Gina Miller is London’s Pakistani-origin Mayor Sadiq Khan stands on number 4. With 5th rank is Neil Basu, the UK’s senior-most counter-terrorism officer. While Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan Venky, a Nobel Prize-winner and president of the Royal Society, is on the number 9. Lastly, the 10th spot in this year’s power list is UK-based Indian-origin businessmen Hinduja brothers –Gopichand and Srichand.
