Vinesh Phogat qualifies for 2020 Tokyo Olympics in women’s wrestling
Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian wrestler to secure an Olympic quota for the 2020 Tokyo Games. Tokyo Games are going to start from July 24, 2020. One of India’s brightest hopes, Vinesh Phogat had been preparing for the seemingly unbeatable Japanese the whole year. The 25-year-old stunned reigning silver-medalist Sarah Hildebrandt 8-2 in the World Wrestling Championships. Almost 5 times Sara had got hold of Vinesh’s right leg but with her immense upper-body strength. But, the Indian did not let her rival take advantage. With the win, Vinesh has progressed to the bronze medal bout against Maria Prevolaraki of Greece. On the other hand, another Indian Seema Bisla, slipped to an 11-3 loss to Ekaterina Poleshchuk in the second round of repechage in the 50kg category. Sarita Mor (57kg) and Kiran Bishnoi (76kg) were two of the other wrestlers in contention for a bronze medal but they had suffered defeats in their respective qualification matches.
