Yet Another Incident of Cops Beating UP Journalist

A group of police officers thrashed, punched and abused a journalist, even when he pleads to stop. A video of the same comes at a time when Uttar Pradesh is in the national glare over the journalists arrest on charges of “defaming” State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The journalist said that a group of Railway Police personnel abused and locked him up last night when he was covering the goods train derailment in Shamli district.

“They (Government Railway Police personnel) were in plain clothes. One hit my camera and it fell down. When I picked it up, they hit and abused me while I was shooting from the spot of the derailment. I was locked up, stripped and they urinated in my mouth,” journalist Amit Sharma said.

According to news sources, several local journalists rushed to the police station when they learned about the incident and put the footage of cops beating Amit Sharma on social media.

Sharma was released early this morning after other journalists protested at the local police station.

The police officers, SHO GRP Rakesh Kumar and Constable Sanjay Pawar have now been suspended.

“We have come across a video where a journalist has been beaten up & put up in a lock up. DGP UP OP Singh has ordered for immediate suspension of SHO GRP Shamli Rakesh Kumar & Const. Sanjay Pawar,” the Uttar Pradesh police tweeted.

Many on social media have held up as another instance of journalists being targeted in Uttar Pradesh.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the state to release a journalist, who had been arrested, over a tweet, which had objectionable comments on Yogi Adityanath.
